Some time around 1882, Paul Ehrlich, a German medical researcher working with Koch and using Fanny Angelina Eilshemius’s agar tissue cultures, discovered that methylene blue would stain bugs. It was this stain that revealed the tubercle bacillus in all its glory. Intrigued that dye didn’t stain some cultures, Koch guessed that they might be absorbing the dye, which meant you might be able to do things to the bugs with the dyes. After seven years and 605 different dye prepararions, Ehrlich came up with “Preparation 606” (a.k.a. Salvarsan), the first “magic bullet” treatment for disease (in this case: syphilis). In 1908 Ehrlich got the Nobel for inventing chemotherapy.
